Biochemistry

Institute of Home Economics is among the six colleges of the University of Delhi to offer the esteemed course in BSc (Hons) Biochemistry. The course was started from the academic year 2007-08 to cater to the growing demand of professionals in Biochemistry and allied areas. The course is multi-disciplinary in nature and imparts meticulous training to the students to shape them into Biochemistry professionals with conceptual clarity and updated laboratory skills. Theoretical knowledge as well as extensive hands-on practical training are provided to students in various advanced level theory and practical subjects. The program inculcates conceptualization of collaborative and multifaceted studies along with amalgamation and application of the basics of Biochemistry in research and technology. Analytical and problem solving skills are developed in students to cultivate competence in research and innovation. The department is also closely involved in teaching and learning of Nutritional Biochemistry to BSc (Hons) Home Science, BSc (Pass) Home Science, MSc Food and Nutrition and DDPHN programs in the college. Workshops, symposia, webinars, quizzes, educational trips and personality development programs are a part and parcel of departmental activities. Eminent scientists from various research institutes and industries are regularly invited to ignite the minds of budding Biochemists. Students are also encouraged to undertake in-house research projects and summer internships that aims to help students gain exposure to cutting-edge research facilities, develop essential practical skills and learn effective scientific communication. Alumni reunion meet and Career counselling seminars are conducted annually to keep the students updated on various career prospects in healthcare sector, basic research, hospital management, clinical labs, Pharmaceutical industry, etc.
The department has competent faculty members with vast teaching and research experience. Also, non-teaching technical staff is well versed and provides great support in conducting practicals. The department has well equipped laboratories, an instrumentation room with UV- Visible spectrophotometers, Colorimeters, PCR machine, CO 2 incubator, ELISA reader, laminar flow culture hood, BOD, Microscopes and Horizontal as well as Vertical Electrophoresis units. Students also have free access to computer labratory with internet facility and various essential technical softwares.
