Institute of Home Economics, a college of the University of Delhi which has come to occupy a paramount stature in the matrix of higher professional education for women, was founded by Dr (Mrs) S Malhan in the year 1961. The success story of Institute of Home Economics is a stirring tale of commitment, perseverance and devotion scripted single-handedly by Dr. (Mrs) Malhan. The ideals and objectives, which she subsumed into her endeavour, continue to inspire and guide every one of us at the Institute of Home Economics. Dr (Mrs) Malhan passed on the baton to Dr. (Mrs) Kumud Khanna who led the Institute for almost two decades with great astuteness and elan. Thereafter, Dr. Santosh Jain Passi was at the helm of affairs of the college. The Institute celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2011 amidst much professional fanfare and with resolve to go up further in its onward march to excellence.
The Institute has optimally designed the transformation process of students to top class professionals in the wake of fast changing technological developments and at the same time being fully conscious of ethical codes and human values. To add on to the infrastructure and to accommodate increasing student strength, a new building block has been added to the college with several lecture theatres, a conference room and state-of-the-art laboratories, a day care center, nursery school and an amphitheater. The college is situated in salubrious settings next to Hauz Khas metro station and is highly accessible to students.
Today, the Institute of Home Economics is a vibrant institution imparting professional education to more than 1500 young girls in various disciplines at undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral level. We, at the institute, attach paramount priority to pedagogical innovation and efficacy, and research in frontal areas. The significance of our teaching and research lies in its high impact on societal enhancement. Besides providing quality professional education, great emphasis is laid on the eclectic personality development of our students.
