SPIC MACAY SOCIETY (IHE CHAPTER)

SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth) is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 by Dr. Kiran Seth, a professor at IIT Delhi. The organization’s primary objective is to promote and preserve Indian classical music, dance, arts, and culture, particularly among young people.

Key Aspects of SPIC MACAY:

  1. Classical Arts Promotion: SPIC MACAY focuses on bringing Indian classical music, dance, theater, folk arts, and yoga into the lives of students and youth. It aims to foster an appreciation for these cultural forms, which might otherwise be overlooked in modern education systems that often prioritize Western arts and entertainment.
  2. Live Performances and Workshops: The organization arranges live performances, workshops, and interactive sessions with renowned classical artists and performers. These events are held in educational institutions across India and sometimes internationally. Artists in disciplines like Hindustani and Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kathakali, and more perform and teach.
  3. Cultural Retreats: SPIC MACAY also organizes cultural camps, known as “Virasat” (heritage camps), where participants can engage deeply with Indian classical traditions, attend lectures, and take part in workshops over extended periods.
  4. Student Involvement: One of the unique features of SPIC MACAY is its emphasis on student participation. The organization is largely driven by student volunteers who are involved in organizing events, spreading awareness, and ensuring the smooth execution of various programs. This fosters a sense of responsibility and community among the youth.
  5. Global Reach: While it started in India, SPIC MACAY has extended its reach internationally, with chapters in many countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several European nations. This allows global audiences to experience Indian classical arts and culture.
  6. Philosophy: The organization’s philosophy is based on the idea that exposure to traditional Indian arts and culture not only enriches the aesthetic sensibility of individuals but also contributes to their overall growth as human beings. SPIC MACAY believes that these art forms, with their emphasis on discipline, mindfulness, and spirituality, have a transformative impact on young minds.
  7. Educational Integration: SPIC MACAY integrates cultural education with academic learning, believing that a balanced exposure to arts, culture, and academics leads to holistic development. It often works closely with schools and colleges to embed cultural learning in students’ lives alongside their academic pursuits.
  8. Inspiring Youth: The overarching goal of SPIC MACAY is to inspire youth to embrace and continue the rich cultural traditions of India, fostering a deep connection to the country’s heritage while promoting creative expression and critical thinking.
