Community Engagement and Outreach

समुदाय भागीदारी और संपर्क

Working with communities is a passionate and integral part of pedagogical practice, as it allows for a more inclusive and collaborative approach to education. This collaborative learning approach fosters a culture of mutual respect and a sense of belonging ultimately leading to more meaningful and impactful learning outcomes for our students.

Engaging Hearts and Minds: IHE Community Outreach

An Overview

Initiatives

Description

National Service Scheme

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a central scheme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. Its primary goal is to develop the personality of student volunteers through active participation in community service, fostering sensitivity, responsibility, and an awareness of India's socio-economic realities. Some national-level programmes that IHE NSS volunteers participate in include Swachhta Pakhwada, Meri Maati-Mera Desh, Health and Medical Checkups and Cancer Awareness Camps.

NSS IHE community outreach initiatives include flood relief camps, Food distribution drives, collaboration with community networks for sanitary pad distribution, blood donation, awareness and social advocacy on contemporary concerns on girl child, disability and road safety.

Public Health Nutrition Outreach

Initiatives include activities for ICDS programme beneficiaries, including adolescent girls, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and other women in the neighbouring colonies of Neb Sarai, Lado Sarai, Kotla Mubarakpur, Munirka, and Shahpur Jat.  Highlighted Programmes are Poshan Pakwada and celebration of Poshan Maah.

Empowering Urban Women through Literacy

'The Each one Enable one'for Home Science students is dedicated to imparting functional literacy to disadvantaged adolescent girls and women who have never had the opportunity to attend school. Utilizing literacy primers from the Jamia Literacy Resource Centre, this initiative is supported by faculty from Home Science as part of Development Communication, Extension, and Journalism.Beyond literacy, women also receive needs-based skill training aimed at enhancing their personal and professional lives, often boosting their income-earning potential.

Digital Literacy Training Programme

Considering the need especially for women to be digitally literate since women from the lower socio-economic strata have lower levels of education and low/no opportunities for receiving any kind of training. In 2019, the digital literacy training program was launched by the department of DCEJ. Ever since, more than 140 women have been receiving digital skill training every year by the final year students. Over 140 women were trained in digital literacy in 2021–22. The curriculum includes needs assessment, application selection, training, and instruction utilizing a 100-hour digital literacy module based on a research project funded by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, GOI).

Creating Resource Centres in Schools

Elementary education students at our institution actively participate in pedagogical training by establishing resource centres in nearby MCD schools. Each year, approximately 10 of these centres are established, enriching educational resources and fostering interactive learning environments.

As part of their curriculum, students engage in mandatory internship programmes within government primary schools, gaining practical teaching experience and making meaningful contributions to the neighbouring school community.

Aarambh Child Development Centre

Nestled in the heart of Hauz Khas, our center provides child care and preschool services to neighbouring families and communities. We conduct parent seminars and guidance sessions to support family involvement in early childhood education. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the center adapted by offering online sessions for children, ensuring continued learning and engagement.
