In the contemporary times, communication has the power to touch and transform lives of people
by empowering them with information and knowledge. It is with this conviction that the
Department was set up in 2004 and offers specialization in Development Communication and
Extension to students of B.Sc. Home Science courses. The students are exposed to a variety of
subjects ranging from Fundamentals of Human Communication, to Extension Management,
Mass communication, Media Studies, Gender, Media and Society, Advertising and Public
Relations and Development Communication and Journalism. The students receive training both
in the theoretical as well as the practical aspects of Communication through modern ICTs as well
as traditional media. The students ideate, script and produce communication materials such as
radio programs, short films, documentaries, participatory videos, digital stories, photo features,
power point presentations, newsletters and audio-visual shows. Along with this, print as well as
traditional media such as educational floor and board games, grassroots comics, posters, info-
graphics, advertisements, flip charts, flash cards, bulletin board, street play and puppetry are also
designed and developed. The Department has a state-of- the-art audio studio for training students
in radio production.
Besides media production, field visits, interaction with community members at the grass-root
level, interface with the industry, seminars, workshops and lectures by experts, inter-college and
intra-college competitions are an integral part the course. Every year the Department organizes
annual academic event COMSCAPE focusing on various issues ranging from contemporary
social, economic and technological concerns of society. Besides this, the department trains the
students in fulfilling their social responsibilities by reaching out to the community through a
community out-reach literacy, digital literacy and skill training program, Each One Enable One
The Department organizes short–term certificate courses from time to time for the benefit of
students such as in Radio Jockeying Campus to Corporate Photography The Art of
Storytelling Traditional media and Use of Software for Print Media . The Department also
facilitates internship opportunities for desirous students in NGOs, media houses, radio channels
and Development organizations.
The faculty of the Department is highly experienced and is involved in research and outreach
activities in addition to teaching. The faculty members have published several research papers in
various national and international journals and have authored many books on communication and
allied fields. Students are also registered for Ph.D. program under the guidance of expert faculty
of the Department. The Department started offering BA(Hons) in Journalism since the academic
year 2017-18.
After passing out with the specialization, the students can either take up jobs directly or else
undertake Master’s Program in a variety of fields such as Development Communication and
Extension, Development studies, Mass Communication, Gender studies, Media Management,
Media and Governance, Social work or Business Management. They can also undertake Diploma
courses in Development Communication, Advertising and Public Relations, Media production,
Corporate Communication, Broadcast or Print Journalism. Those interested in teaching at school
level can also join the B.Ed. program.
