About the Department

B.El.Ed is a four year integrated teacher education program, the first professional degree in the field of elementary education initiated by the University of Delhi in 1995 with the aim of enhancing the professional knowledge and expertise of elementary teachers. It also attempts to address the professional needs and demands of elementary teaching, and thereby strengthen the elementary education of the country. The program is being offered by a select few colleges under Delhi University for the past two decades. The students passing out of B.El. Ed. have made their presence as professionals in the field of education. The Institute of Home Economics has been offering the course since the academic year 2004-05.. Department of elementary education at IHE has a dedicated and well-qualified faculty and over the years the students have performed extremely well and have been securing top positions in the University. Admission to this course is through a centralized admission test conducted by Central Institute of Education, University of Delhi. Job Prospects

The B.El.Ed. programme prepares students for a wide range of professional academic options such as teaching and research in elementary education in Government Non-Government schools, pursuing post-graduation and subsequently qualifying to be teacher educators in State Institutes/University Departments/Colleges. Some of the job avenues for students are: Teaching in Government private-run schools, Administrative positions in schools/ NGO/ Educational Commissions, Textbook writing, Curriculum development, career in Publication houses NGO Research in Education and Allied disciplines, Theatre in Education. Besides being eligible for a plethora of job opportunities, B.El.Ed. Graduates can also pursue Masters in various disciplines such as: Linguistics, Sociology, Social Work, Elementary Education, Psychology, Human Development, English, Mathematics, Environmental Studies or Education
