The Department of English offers courses in both language and literature to the students at IHE.
Those enrolled in Home Science (Pass and Honours), Microbiology, Biochemistry, Food
Technology and Journalism are taught English communication skills as part of the compulsory
AECC paper, in the first year of their undergraduate studies. The curriculum aims to improve the
listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the students with the aim of preparing them to
face the challenges of higher studies or of a work environment.
The department also offers an English literature course as a Liberal Option to the students
enrolled in the B.El.Ed programme, in the second and third year of their undergraduate studies.
The focus of the curriculum is to acquaint students with a wide array of literary works, from the
16 century onwards to the present day. The students are trained to develop their analytical and
critical abilities and fine tune their writing skills, in order to address their professional needs and
requirements as future educators
