Enrichment and Empowerment

The institute is dedicated to empowering girl students to play a role in the development of the country. We see our students as equal partners in the country’s professional, intellectual, and capacity-building initiatives. While being firmly grounded in our culture’s customs and traditions, the college endeavours to equip them to meet the challenges of an increasingly globalised world. We hope to assist young women in becoming independent, critical thinkers, and compassionate individuals. The college is committed to providing young women the information, abilities, opportunities, and resources they need to exercise their rights, make educated decisions, and actively engage in society at large. It is about giving women the tools they need to live lives of dignity, agency, and self-determination.

Events organised on women and gender issues

The college organises several events that focus on gender-based issues including workshops, seminars and talks by eminent personalities. Student bodies and  societies also organise events and present performances that aim to create awareness on women’s issues. Some of the newer initiatives include a menstrual health society (Maitri), and a mental health society (Urja).

Student activities on gender

In the college, students are equal participants in ensuring the institute’s commitment to promote gender sensitivity. Clubs and societies run by students focus on raising awareness on gender related issues by enabling students an interface with ground realities. This is achieved through organisation of community outreach programs, and through gender sensitization activities such as poster making competitions, film making on gender issues, street plays, theatre etc.

  • Maitri, the menstrual health society, addresses the taboos and stigma associated with menstruation and enables students to communicate and open up with family/peers about menstruation-related challenges
  • Since its inception has organised various events such as reel making competition on themes of menstrual hygiene, taboos related to menstruation, safe disposal of sanitary pads and a healthy lifestyle during menstruation; workshop on using storytelling as a medium for awareness on menstrual health and hygiene and reproductive health issues
  • Has also initiated conversations by organising interactive talk on awareness about PCOD and PCOS and a a poster-making competition on topics such as Menstrual Hygiene, Safe Disposal of Sanitary Pads, Happy Periods, Alternatives to Sanitary Pads, and Breaking The taboo around Menstruation
  • Focused on community involvement through organising newspaper donation drive and visit to the NGO Goonj, to learn about the production of environment friendly sanitary pads from cloth and other materials donated by communities and organizations
  • Student theatre society, Navrang, widening the scope of gender sensitisation through its production on the plight of male rape survivors. The production was aimed to display the shame, disgust and reluctance the victims feel and the manner in which society can contribute in helping them cope and has gained recognition at BITS Pilani, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, Bharat Rang Mahotsav and others.
  • Fashion society, Poise leads a dialogue on the issue of dowry in India through their annual production, aimed to convey the harm done by the age-old practice of dowry, leading to financial burden on families with girls, domestic violence and even dowry related deaths.
  • Shakti Sangam, an event by Rotaract club of Activa Delhi highlighted the concept of women empowerment and featured a variety of competitions, inviting participants from diverse fields of talent, including dance, Nukkad Natak, singing, poetry, and fashion shows addressing critical issues such as rape, physical assault, and discrimination against women
  • North East Students’ Association, NESA, portrayed empowerment of women of North East through their fashion show as part of the Shakti Sangam event
  • Entrepreneurship society, Enactus, initiated Project Ahar: Nourishment Ki Nayi Pehchan aimed at providing nutritious whey protein beverages to malnourished individuals and creating women entrepreneurs

Concerted focus on gender in research

Research enables individuals to immerse themselves in a discipline. It also allows one to capture field realities. With this aim, our students and faculty have continually engaged themselves in research focused on women and gender issues. Some such areas of research are women and their representation and role in sports, media, law, healthcare, nutrition, education and textiles. Research has been focused on both rural and urban women and the issues that confront them.

Research is undertaken at the undergraduate level, postgraduate level and doctoral level. Many faculty projects also focus on the issues of young girls and women.
